Residential Settlement and Social Segregation

Residential Settlement as it Links to Social Segregation in San Fernando

Gulf View is part of the outskirts of the San Fernando area however it has adapted a name for itself because of the activities that take place as well as the Residential area that has developed over time. With all the growth taking place there has been the occurrence of social segregation between the population.

Like Mycoo stated, “social segregation always occurred in Latin America and Caribbean Cities” this is reflected in and around the city of San Fernando. The social fragmentation and economic disparities play and integral role in the decision making process of where people choose to settle. The picture shown is one of the “most elite” or “high class” are found in San Fernando: Gulf View. The residence in this area is different from those seen in other locations, it has a sense off wealth and is clearly visible. This segregation can be similar to the reasons Mycoo gave in her article where the opinions of the elite are that the failure of the government is responsible or the fear or violence caused the wealthier individuals to shift and form a community away from others.

Housing at Gulf View (middle/upper class)

With reference to Ullman and Harris Model the upper class settled in the outer section of the city area, this is clearly reflected here. Majority of the rich are seen further away from the core towards the outskirts because they have all resources available. They do however exist in an area with high activity since there are different places for socialization such as Gulf City Mall, Rig, KFC, Pizza Hut, Papa John’s and more. In addition to this there is the private hospital Gulf View Medical in the same area, for some it’s walking distance.

GATE COMMUNITY

Mycco also wrote about the advancement of gate communities and how security has increased over time. Now there are security booth, like seen in the photo below as well as more technological devices used such as camera and alarm systems to ensure proper safety measures. Development has been an ongoing process and in addition to it so does technological advancement and hence there are many different measures for protection of home and self.
